There was a time, not far away, in which life and death, when they touched hands, could be confused, one in the other. What resembled death, yet was still life, could be declared death, and those who were only sound asleep, suffered the worst of fates. They were believed to be dead, and buried. Alive.
For a long time, and especially during cholera epidemics, the terror of suffering this fate has afflicted people, from the poorest to the richest sovereigns. And when, over time, the oldest tombs were reopened to collect the bones, clear the cemeteries and fill the ossuaries, it was not uncommon to discover with dismay coffins scratched from the inside. And fingers, now skeletal, consumed in the attempt to free themselves and get out.
For this reason, some devices were used, the so-called safe coffins, which allowed the outside world, that of the living, to be warned of having ended up prematurely in that of the dead.
La candela arde di fronte alla finestra, crea un alone caldo e sicuro. Ma fuori le prime nebbie salgono dalla terra umida, e ricordano storie lugubri e fredde.
C’è stato un tempo, non lontano, nel quale la vita e la morte, quando si sfioravano le mani, potevano essere confuse, l’una nell’altra. Ciò che somigliava alla morte, eppure era ancora vita, poteva essere dichiarata morte, e coloro che erano solo profondamente addormentati, subivano il peggiore dei destini. Venivano creduti morti, e sepolti. Vivi.

Per questo motivo si ricorse ad alcuni accorgimenti, le cosiddette bare sicure o safety coffins, che permettessero di avvisare il mondo esterno, quello dei vivi, di essere finiti prematuramente in quello dei morti.
One of these devices was proposed in 1798, when P.G. Pessler, a German priest, suggested inserting a rope tied to the church bells into the coffin, so that if the dead realized they were not truly dead, they could move the rope, ring the bells, and be freed.
From this proposal, the smallest grave bells were born. Small saviors of those who, in the darkness of the earth and among the worms, were still breathing…
Uno di questi accorgimenti venne proposto nel 1798, quando P.G. Pessler, un sacerdote tedesco suggerì di inserire nella bara una corda legata alle campane della chiesa, così che se i morti si fossero accorti di non essere veramente morti avrebbero potuto muovere la corda, suonare le campane, ed essere liberati.
Da questa proposta nacquero le più piccole campanelle delle tombe. Piccole salvatrici di coloro che, nel buio della terra e fra i vermi, respiravano ancora…

For my series Legends for Halloween, not a legend, but reality I wanted to represent with this pattern.
A buried woman and her grave bell.
It is up to you to decide whether the bell will ring or remain silent.
A small key is hanging on the tombstone. Who knows if it will be used, or will it remain there forever?
E ora immaginate di camminare, nottetempo, in un vecchio cimitero… la civetta urla, ma a rompere il silenzio è qualcos’altro…
Il lugubre tintinnare di una campanella, che si agita, solitaria, fra i vivi e i morti.
Per la mia serie Legends for Halloween, non una leggenda, ma la realtà ho voluto rappresentare con questo schema.

Sta a voi decidere se la campanella suonerà o resterà muta.
Una piccola chiave è appesa alla lapide. Chissà se verrà usata, o resterà lì appesa per sempre?
