Betsy - The Hare Witch

Hello Stitchers! Today I’m pleased to introduce you to a little friend who will be keeping you company over the next few months leading up to Halloween. Her name is Betsy, and she’s a hare witch, a lover of carved pumpkins and spells, especially those performed in the kitchen.
The pattern also includes a pumpkin, to stick in flowerpots or wherever you like. There are two similar versions of it: the second version is a SURPRISE, and you’ll discover it inside the pattern!

Buongiorno Ricamatrici! Oggi sono lieta di presentarvi una piccola amica che farà compagnia durante I prossimi mesi fino ad Halloween. Si chiama Betsy ed è una strega lepre, amante delle zucche intagliate e degli incantesimi, specialmente quelli che si compiono in cucina.
Lo schema comprende anche la zucchetta, da infilare nei vasi di fiori o dove volete, che però è presente in due versioni simili all’interno del set: la seconda versione è una sorpresa e la scoprirete dentro lo schema!


I also wanted to realize a doll because I love this kind of finishing, obviously in my own style. If you like it, I might create more, but I won’t reveal anything for now, because these little animal witches will be the protagonists of a pattern coming out soon.

Ho voluto realizzare anche io una bambola perché amo molto questo tipo di rifiniture, ovviamente secondo il mio stile. Se vi piacerà è possibile che ne nasceranno altre, ma per adesso non vi rivelo nulla, perché queste streghine-animali saranno presto protagoniste di uno schema che uscirà prossimamente.

Little Pumpkin Ghosts

Dear Stitchers,
is it a bit late for Halloween? No, it’s never too late for Halloween – and even more so for Thanksgiving. I drew one of these sweet ghosts for a cross-stitch magazine, stitched it in a couple of nights, and fell in love with it so much that I wanted to expand the subject by creating other little patterns and making a set to be proposed directly to you. That’s how my Little Pumpkin Ghosts were born, which try to be scary, but I doubt they could ever scare anyone.

è un po’ tardi per Halloween? No dai, non è mai tardi per Halloween – e ancora di più, per la Festa del Ringraziamento. Ho disegnato uno di questi dolcissimi fantasmi per il numero di una rivista di punto croce, l’ho ricamato in un paio di notti, e me ne sono innamorata così tanto da voler ampliare il soggetto creando altri piccoli schemi e facendone un set da proporre direttamente a voi. Così sono nati i miei Little Pumpkin Ghosts, che tentano di fare paura, ma dubito che possano mai spaventare qualcuno.


The first one hides behind the pumpkins, waiting to pop out and (not) scare anyone! Three other little ghosts hover over the pumpkins in a “terrifying” procession. The third, the smallest, is so tiny that it needs a sign to say “BOO”, and it will surely scare everyone (let’s make him believe it, so he’s happy!). Finally, I decided to finish the last one by shaping it to create a little doll. By now it has understood that it won’t scare anyone, so it is busy helping as much as it can, to decorate the house for Halloween, with its garland of dry leaves.

Il primo si nasconde dietro le zucche, in attesa di sbucare fuori e (non) spaventare qualcuno! Altri tre piccoli fantasmi aleggiano sopra le zucche in una “terrificante” processione. Il terzo, il più piccino, è talmente piccolo da avere bisogno di un cartello per dire “BOO”, e sicuramente farà molta paura a chiunque (facciamoglielo credere, così è contento!). infine, l’ultimo ho deciso di rifinirlo sagomato per crearne una bambolina. Ormai ha capito che non farà paura a nessuno, così si dà da fare per aiutare come può, a decorare la casa per Halloween, con la sua ghirlanda di foglie secche.

A Witch Lives Here

I have in my mind that a Witch’s house is always full of little magics hidden in every corner, and that even when it is shady and a little disturbing, it always has a sort of welcome all its own, magical in its own way.
It is a house in which souls often find warmth and healing, more than the bodies they inhabit, and a strange yet beautiful light surrounds them. They are houses suspended in time, and whoever is lucky enough to be welcomed there, remains outside of time, at least until, setting foot outside their threshold, they re-enter the common world.
I have felt this sensation, a few times. And for a moment, leaving those places, I did not remember where I was and how long I had “been out”. I have the intimate hope of making my house the same way, little by little, sooner or later.
I will certainly hang something there that reminds, even just myself, to nourish the magic every day. Because that is what witches do, they keep the magic alive, like the flame that burns under their cauldrons.

Ho in mente che la casa di una Strega sia sempre piena di piccolo magie nascoste in ogni angolo, e che anche quando è ombrosa e un po’ inquietante, abbia sempre una sorta di accoglienza tutta sua, magica a suo modo.
È una casa nella quale spesso le anime trovano calore e guarigione, più dei corpi nei quali abitano, e una luce strana eppure bella le avvolge. Sono case sospese nel tempo, e chiunque abbia la fortuna di venirvi accolto, resta fuori dal tempo, almeno fino a quando, mettendo un piede fuori dalla loro soglia, non rientra nel mondo comune.
L’ho provata questa sensazione, qualche volta. E per un attimo, uscita da quei luoghi, non ricordavo dove fossi e da quanto tempo ero “stata fuori”. Ho l’intima speranza di rendere la mia casa nello stesso modo, poco a poco, prima o poi.
Di certo vi appenderò qualcosa che ricordi, anche solo a me stessa, di nutrire la magia ogni giorno. Perché è questo che fanno le streghe, mantengono accesa la magia, come la fiamma che arde sotto ai loro calderoni.


I designed this set, a little cute and a little playful, to give that extra touch of sweetness and humor to the witchiness that is in some of us – sometimes more than we think.
You will find the black cat, which has always been the emblem of the witch’s familiar, then a white pumpkin – black cats and white pumpkins are one of my obsessions, I love them! – and finally a cute ornament to hang on the door when you are busy preparing your filters and spells: “The witch is in, do not disturb!”

Ho disegnato questo set, un po’ carino e un po’ scherzoso, per dare quel tocco in più di dolcezza e umorismo all’essere strega che c’è in alcune di noi – a volte più di quante pensiamo.
Troverete il gatto nero, da sempre emblema del famiglio della strega, poi una zucchetta bianca – gatti neri e zucche bianche sono una delle mie ossessioni, li adoro! – e infine un simpatico ornament da appendere alla porta quando sarete impegnate a preparare i vostri filtri e incantesimi: “La strega è dentro, non disturbare!”

In the photo you can also see another new product that I will present to you soon, my new, wonderful, Tiny Witch Bells, this time very little, with a beautiful relief of a hare and a bird, and suitable for hanging both on the front door and, due to their tiny size, on diaries – or your Book of Shadows! – but also in your car, so that they protect your travels along the roads of this world… and the other one.

Legends for Halloween. The Ghost Spinner

Light a candle, a new story is about to begin.
In some villages in our mountains, it is said that on certain nights a creature as fascinating as it was chilling would appear. A very tall, thin woman, with diaphanous skin and a long, white dress. A female ghost, as many called her. On certain occasions, she would appear sitting at a large spinning wheel, where she would spin and spin, perhaps impalpable wool… perhaps the destiny of human beings.

Accendete una candela, una nuova storia sta per cominciare.
In alcuni paesini delle nostre montagne si racconta che in certe notti comparisse una creatura tanto affascinante quanto raggelante. Una donna altissima, magra, dalla pelle diafana e dalla lunga veste bianchissima. Una fantasma, così veniva chiamata da molti. In certe occasioni compariva seduta a un grande arcolaio, dove filava e filava, forse lana impalpabile… forse il destino degli esseri umani.


Those who saw her appear, at the end of a dark and deserted road, often died of fear, but sometimes they survived, and then they would tell. They said they had met the ghost spinner, and that they had escaped just before she, looking up from the constant turning of the spinning wheel, looked them in the eyes.
It is not known what would have happened, if she had succeeded. Perhaps only those who died, would have been able to reveal it.

Coloro che la vedevano apparire, in fondo a una strada buia e deserta, spesso morivano di paura, ma qualche volta riuscivano a sopravvivere, e allora raccontavano. Raccontavano di aver incontrato la fantasma filatrice, e di essere fuggiti poco prima che lei, alzando lo sguardo dal girare costante della ruota del filatoio, li guardasse negli occhi.
Non è dato sapere cosa sarebbe accaduto, se lei ci fosse riuscita. Forse solo coloro che ne morirono, avrebbero potuto svelarlo.


I dedicated this pattern to her, the Ghost Spinner of our legends. I wonder if she was known and encountered in other countries? I’m sure she was.

Ho dedicato questo schema a lei, la Fantasma Filatrice delle nostre leggende. Chissà se anche in altri paesi era conosciuta e incontrata? Sono certa di sì.

Legends for Halloween. The Grave Bell

The candle burns in front of the window, creating a warm and safe halo. But outside the first mists rise from the damp earth, and recall gloomy and cold stories.
There was a time, not far away, in which life and death, when they touched hands, could be confused, one in the other. What resembled death, yet was still life, could be declared death, and those who were only sound asleep, suffered the worst of fates. They were believed to be dead, and buried. Alive.
For a long time, and especially during cholera epidemics, the terror of suffering this fate has afflicted people, from the poorest to the richest sovereigns. And when, over time, the oldest tombs were reopened to collect the bones, clear the cemeteries and fill the ossuaries, it was not uncommon to discover with dismay coffins scratched from the inside. And fingers, now skeletal, consumed in the attempt to free themselves and get out.
For this reason, some devices were used, the so-called safe coffins, which allowed the outside world, that of the living, to be warned of having ended up prematurely in that of the dead.

La candela arde di fronte alla finestra, crea un alone caldo e sicuro. Ma fuori le prime nebbie salgono dalla terra umida, e ricordano storie lugubri e fredde.
C’è stato un tempo, non lontano, nel quale la vita e la morte, quando si sfioravano le mani, potevano essere confuse, l’una nell’altra. Ciò che somigliava alla morte, eppure era ancora vita, poteva essere dichiarata morte, e coloro che erano solo profondamente addormentati, subivano il peggiore dei destini. Venivano creduti morti, e sepolti. Vivi.
Per molto tempo, e in particolare durante le epidemie di colera, il terrore di subire questo destino ha afflitto le persone, dalle più povere ai più ricchi sovrani. E quando, nel tempo, le tombe più vecchie venivano riaperte per raccogliere le ossa, liberare i cimiteri e riempire gli ossari, non era raro scoprire con sgomento bare graffiate dall’interno. E dita, ormai scheletriche, consumate nel tentativo di liberarsi e uscire.
Per questo motivo si ricorse ad alcuni accorgimenti, le cosiddette bare sicure o safety coffins, che permettessero di avvisare il mondo esterno, quello dei vivi, di essere finiti prematuramente in quello dei morti.


One of these devices was proposed in 1798, when P.G. Pessler, a German priest, suggested inserting a rope tied to the church bells into the coffin, so that if the dead realized they were not truly dead, they could move the rope, ring the bells, and be freed.
From this proposal, the smallest grave bells were born. Small saviors of those who, in the darkness of the earth and among the worms, were still breathing…

Uno di questi accorgimenti venne proposto nel 1798, quando P.G. Pessler, un sacerdote tedesco suggerì di inserire nella bara una corda legata alle campane della chiesa, così che se i morti si fossero accorti di non essere veramente morti avrebbero potuto muovere la corda, suonare le campane, ed essere liberati.
Da questa proposta nacquero le più piccole campanelle delle tombe. Piccole salvatrici di coloro che, nel buio della terra e fra i vermi, respiravano ancora…


And now imagine walking, at night, in an old cemetery… the owl screams, but something else breaks the silence…
The mournful tinkling of a bell, which shakes, alone, between the living and the dead.

For my series Legends for Halloween, not a legend, but reality I wanted to represent with this pattern.
A buried woman and her grave bell.
It is up to you to decide whether the bell will ring or remain silent.
A small key is hanging on the tombstone. Who knows if it will be used, or will it remain there forever?

E ora immaginate di camminare, nottetempo, in un vecchio cimitero… la civetta urla, ma a rompere il silenzio è qualcos’altro…
Il lugubre tintinnare di una campanella, che si agita, solitaria, fra i vivi e i morti.

Per la mia serie Legends for Halloween, non una leggenda, ma la realtà ho voluto rappresentare con questo schema.
Una donna sepolta e la sua campanella della tomba.
Sta a voi decidere se la campanella suonerà o resterà muta.
Una piccola chiave è appesa alla lapide. Chissà se verrà usata, o resterà lì appesa per sempre?

History Witches II Mystery SAL

Dear Stitchers, a little less than a year ago I organized this SAL and you loved it very much. The pattern that emerged continues to be one of the most loved, and I can only be happy about it.
For this reason, I am even more pleased to present to you, today, the new History Witches II Mystery SAL, dedicated to four other historical witches who are part of our past.

The History Witches II Mystery SAL is organized, like the previous one, in five surprise stages that will accompany us, step by step, towards Halloween. The pattern portrays four historical women, who lived in America, England, Denmark and Norway, and who in different centuries were accused of witchcraft. Next to them, this time I wanted to depict a magical tool that historical witches usually used during their art.
For each step dedicated to each of the four witches, a short text is included that tells the story of the woman, her events and the sad epilogue of her life.
Each text also contains a little prayer to honor her memory.
Below you can see the first step of the Mystery SAL, with the structure of the pattern.

Clarification: The texts on the short history of each witch will be included only in the individual steps of the Mystery SAL. When the SAL will be finished and the complete pattern will be released, the texts relating to the four witches can be downloaded separately, by accessing the link that will be provided on the instructions page.

The History Witches Mystery SAL begins today, September 5th and will end with the last step, October 5th.
The various steps, released one per week, on Saturday, always considered the day of witches, can be downloaded from the links provided in the first PDF sent. The links will be active only from the date indicated.
By ordering the History Witches II Mystery SAL you will therefore receive the PDF containing the first step and the page of links for the subsequent stages, which you will have to download independently.

History Witches

Dear Stitchers,
Now that the Mystery SAL is over I can show you the finished pattern with the photographs and the official cover – also available to download in the last step of the Mystery SAL for those who participated.
The pattern portrays four historical women – Alice Kyteler, Alice Nutter, Isobel Gowdie and Martha Carrier – who in different centuries and in different countries, were accused of witchcraft and, almost all of them, were killed.

terminato il Mystery SAL posso mostrarvi lo schema finito con le fotografie e la copertina ufficiale – disponibile da scaricare anche nell’ultima tappa del Mystery SAL per coloro che hanno partecipato.
Lo schema ritrae quattro donne storiche che, in secoli diversi e in diversi paesi, sono state accusate di stregoneria e, quasi tutte, sono state uccise.


Next to them I wanted to depict a magical animal, or witch’s familiar, among those considered closest to witches in their magical works at the time of the trials. Where possible, I assigned the witch an animal-familiar that was actually linked to her, according to the historical account of the relevant witchcraft trial.

Accanto a loro ho voluto raffigurare un animale magico, o famiglio della strega, fra quelli ritenuti più vicini alle streghe nelle loro opere magiche all’epoca dei processi. Dove è stato possibile, ho assegnato alla strega un animale-famiglio che risultava effettivamente legato a lei, secondo il resoconto storico del relativo processo per stregoneria.


Within the pattern it is also possible to separately download a short text dedicated to each individual witch, which tells the story of the woman, her events and the epilogue of her life, as well as a little prayer to honor her memory.

Cozy Halloween

Dear Stitchers, I waited a few days to show you all the surprises, since this year there were more than usual. I therefore present to you the latest pattern related to Autumn and Halloween. With this pattern I wanted to continue my line of bookmarks and ornaments, dedicating them to a sweeter and warmer Halloween period. A Halloween to spend surrounded by soft pumpkin-shaped cushions, white pumpkins, a cup of hot chocolate and a good book to read.

Care Ricamine, ho atteso qualche giorno per non mostrarvi tutte le sorprese insieme, dato che quest’anno erano più del solito. Vi presento quindi l’ultim odegli schemi legati all’autunno e ad Halloween. Ho voluto proseguire ancora la mia linea di segnalibri e ornament, dedicandoli ad un periodo di Halloween più dolce e caloroso. Una Halloween da trascorrere circondate di morbidi cuscini a forma di zucca, di zucche bianche, una tazza di cioccolata bollente e un buon libro da leggere.


In this period, every year, I really love reading slightly scary books, and especially books that deal with the stories of medieval witches, preferably fictionalized. I feel I’m very close to them, and I love to turn my thoughts to them as the days pass by at the end of October and the beginning of November.
This set of patterns is specifically aimed at this habit, which I’m sure also belongs to many of you.
In the set you will find a bookmark and an ornament with the white pumpkin, and a bookmark and an ornament with the black cat. He is the perfect witch familiar, and always brings a little magic to the homes he decides to live in.

In questo periodo, ogni anno, amo molto leggere libri un po’ inquietanti, e soprattutto libri che trattano le storie di streghe medievali, meglio se romanzate. Le sento molto vicine, e amo rivolgere loro il mio pensiero mentre i giorni corrono alla fine di Ottobre e agli inizi di Novembre.
Questo set di schemi è proprio rivolto a questa abitudine, che sono sicura appartenga anche a molte di voi.

Let it BOO!

Dear Stitchers,
are you ready for Halloween? This year I had fun drawing the ghosts and I wanted to realize an idea that I had in my mind for some years: a pattern that took up my winter Let it Snow, but in a Halloween version!
So I present to you my LET IT BOO!

Care Ricamine,
siete pronte per Halloween? Quest’anno mi sono divertita a disegnare i fantasmini e ho voluto realizzare un’idea che avevo in mente da alcuni anni: uno schema che riprendesse il mio invernale Let it Snow, ma in versione Halloween!
Vi presento quindi il mio LET IT BOO!


The three larger ghosts are ready to play pranks and scare anyone who comes within their reach, while the three smaller ones, which form three ornaments and can be stitched to create a garland to hang, appear and disappear from oval frames, among little spiders and cobwebs. As with my Let it Snow, also with this pattern you can create many ornaments to create more or less long garlands, but unlike the winter pattern, in which the snowflake to be repeated was only one, this time the little ghosts are all different, and therefore more funny to stitch.

I tre fantasmini più grandi sono già pronti per fare scherzi e spaventare chiunque capiti loro a tiro, mentre i tre più piccolini, che formano tre ornament e possono essere confezionati per creare una ghirlanda da appendere, appaiono e scompaiono da cornicette ovali, fra ragnetti e ragnatele. Come per il mio Let it Snow, anche con questo schema potete realizzare diversi ornament per creare ghirlande più o meno lunghe, ma a differenza dello schema invernale, nel quale il fiocco di neve da ripetere era uno solo, questa volta i tre fantasmini sono tutti leggermente diversi, e quindi più divertenti da ricamare.

History Witches Mystery SAL

Dear Stitchers, I am pleased to present to you my History Witches Mystery SAL, dedicated to the historical witches of our past.
The History Witches Mystery SAL is organized into five surprise steps that will accompany us, towards Halloween. The pattern portrays four historical women, who in different centuries and in different countries were accused of witchcraft and, almost all, were executed.
Next to them I wanted to depict a magical animal, or witch’s familiar, among those considered closest to witches in their magical works at the time of the trials. Where possible, I assigned the witch an animal-familiar that was actually linked to her, according to the historical account of the relevant witchcraft trial.
For each step dedicated to each of the four witches, is also included a short text that tells the story of the woman, her events and the epilogue of her life.
Each text also contains a little prayer to honor her memory.
Below you can see the first Mystery SAL step, with the pattern structure.

The texts on the short story of each witch will be included only in the individual steps of the Mystery SAL. When the SAL will be finished and the complete pattern will be released, the texts relating to the four witches can be downloaded separately by accessing the link provided on the instructions page.

The History Witches Mystery SAL begins on September 18th and will end with the last step, on October 14th.
The various steps, released one per week, on Saturday, which has always been considered the day of the witches, can be downloaded from the links provided in the first PDF sent. The links will only be active from the date indicated.
By ordering the History Witches Mystery SAL you will therefore receive the PDF containing the first step and the page with the links to the subsequent steps, which you will have to download independently.

Care Ricamatrici, sono lieta di presentarvi il mio History Witches Mystery SAL, dedicato alle streghe storiche del nostro passato.
L’History Witches Mystery SAL è organizzato in cinque tappe a sorpresa che ci accompagneranno, passo dopo passo, verso Halloween. Lo schema ritrae quattro donne storiche, che in secoli diversi e in diversi paesi sono state accusate di stregoneria e, quasi tutte, sono state uccise.
Accanto a loro ho voluto raffigurare un animale magico, o famiglio della strega, fra quelli ritenuti più vicini alle streghe nelle loro opere magiche all’epoca dei processi. Dove è stato possibile, ho assegnato alla strega un animale-famiglio che risultava effettivamente legato a lei, secondo il resoconto storico del relativo processo per stregoneria.
Per ogni tappa dedicata a ognuna delle quattro streghe, è compreso anche un breve testo che racconta la storia della donna, le sue vicende e l’epilogo della sua vita.
Ogni testo contiene anche una piccola preghiera per onorare il suo ricordo.
Qui sotto potete vedere il primo step del Mystery SAL, con la struttura dello schema.

I testi sulla breve storia di ogni strega saranno inclusi solamente nelle singole tappe del Mystery SAL. Quando il SAL sarà terminato e lo schema completo sarà rilasciato, i testi relativi alle quattro streghe potranno essere scaricati separatamente, accedendo al link che verrà fornito nella pagina di istruzioni.

L’History Witches Mystery SAL ha inizio il 18 Settembre e terminerà con l’ultima tappa, il 14 Ottobre.
Le varie tappe, rilasciate una alla settimana, nel giorno di sabato, da sempre considerato il giorno delle streghe, potranno essere scaricate dai link forniti nel primo PDF inviato. I link saranno attivi solo a partire dalla data indicata.
Ordinando l’History Witches Mystery SAL riceverete quindi il PDF che contiene la prima tappa e la pagina dei link delle tappe successive, che dovrete scaricare autonomamente.

Salem 1692 and Rebecca Nurse

Dear Stitchers,
I am ready to present you the other two patterns for this autumn season and in particular for the moment of memory of all those who have been victims of the witch hunt. Halloween, in its most serious connotation, is a time dedicated to this too.
As I mentioned, the patterns are dedicated again to Salem and its poor witches. The settings, the colors, the clothes inspire me a lot and I really wanted to immerse myself in them again. This time I also wanted to represent one of the men executed during the trials, since six of the twenty people killed were men.
The first part of this first pattern is dedicated to the victims, a woman – in my imagination she is the brave Martha Carrier, who had a strong personality and a brilliant mind – and a man.
The man, in particular, in my imagination is John Willard, the young constable of Salem who initially was in charge of arresting the alleged witches and taking them to court. He had strong doubts about the veracity of the accusations, realizing the madness that was hidden behind those arrests, and in May 1692 he refused to continue with the arrests. He was accused himself of complicity with witches and of witchcraft, and became a victim of the hunt. When he was hanged in August 1692, he was only 35 years old.
One of the sentences he uttered when he was condemned is remembered here:
“(...) I fear not but the Lord in this due time will make me as white as snow.”

sono pronta a presentarvi gli altri due schemi per questa stagione autunnale e in particolare per il momento della memoria di tutte e tutti coloro che sono state vittime della caccia alle streghe. Halloween, nella sua connotazione più seria, è un tempo dedicato anche a questo.
Come vi avevo accennato, gli schemi sono dedicati nuovamente a Salem e alle sue povere streghe. Le ambientazioni, i colori, gli abiti, mi ispirano molto e avevo davvero voglia di immergermi ancora in essi. Questa volta ho voluto rappresentare anche uno degli uomini, dal momento che sei delle venti persone uccise, erano appunto uomini.
La prima parte del primo schema è dedicata alle vittime, una donna – nella mia immaginazione è la coraggiosa Martha Carrier, che aveva un carattere forte e una mente brillante – e un uomo.
L’uomo, in particolare, nella mia immaginazione è John Willard, il giovane conestabile di Salem che inizialmente si occupava di arrestare le presunte streghe e portarle in tribunale, ma ebbe forti dubbi sulla veridicità delle accuse, si rese conto della follia che si celava dietro quegli arresti, e nel maggio del 1692 si rifiutò di proseguire con gli arresti. Venne accusato lui stesso di complicità con le streghe e di stregoneria, e divenne vittima della caccia. Quando venne impiccato, nell’agosto 1692, aveva solo 35 anni.
Viene ricordata una delle frasi da lui pronunciate quando venne condannato:
“(…) I fear not but the Lord in this due time will make me as white as snow.”
(“(…) non ho paura ma il Signore in questo tempo mi renderà bianco come la neve.”)


Between the two victims, I drew the name of the likely place where they lost their lives. If until a few years ago it was thought that the Salem Witches had been killed in Gallows Hill, it now seems to have been established that the exact place is Proctor’s Ledge, which lends itself much more to the descriptions drawn from the ancient documents relating to the process and the execution.

Furthermore, regardless of the correct place of execution, a place of commemoration was recently created in Proctor’s Hill where many go to honor the memory of the victims. Twenty stems, arranged in a semicircle, bear their names engraved in the stones.

Tra le due vittime, ho disegnato il nome del probabile luogo in cui persero la vita. Se fino ad alcuni anni fa si è pensato che le Streghe di Salem fossero state uccise a Gallows Hill, sembra ormai appurato che il luogo esatto sia Proctor’s Ledge, che si presta molto di più alle descrizioni tratte dalle antiche documentazioni relative al processo e all’esecuzione. Inoltre, a prescindere dal corretto luogo dell’esecuzione, proprio a Proctor’s Hill è stato recentemente creato un luogo di commemorazione nel quale in molte e molti si recano per onorare la memoria delle vittime. Venti steli, disposte a semicerchio, portano incisi i loro nomi nella pietra.


The second part of the pattern depicts the so-called Witch House, the only building that still exists in Salem, directly connected to the time of the trials and their protagonists. The house had in fact belonged to Jonathan Corwin, the magistrate who took care of hearing the depositions of the first accused of witchcraft at the trial. A disturbing house in which lived a man who unfortunately took part in the hunt, standing on the opposite side to the poor women and men who were captured and finally killed.
This pattern is therefore a portrait of the history of the time, to remember it and honor the memory of the victims.

La seconda parte dello schema invece raffigura la cosiddetta Casa delle Streghe, l’unico edificio che ancora esiste in Salem, direttamente collegato al tempo dei processi e ai loro protagonisti. La casa era appartenuta infatti a Jonathan Corwin, il magistrato che si occupò di ascoltare le deposizioni delle prime accusate di stregoneria al processo. Una casa inquietante nella quale visse un uomo che purtroppo prese parte alla caccia, stando dalla parte opposta alle povere donne e ai poveri uomini che ne furono catturati e, infine, uccisi.
Questo schema è quindi un ritratto della storia dell’epoca, per ricordarla, e onorare la memoria delle vittime.


The second pattern continues my series dedicated to the History Witches and depicts another of the most famous women accused of witchcraft in Salem, Rebecca Nurse. Unlike many other accused, Rebecca was a wealthy and very devoted woman, so her arrest aroused no little surprise and doubts about her real guilt. Unfortunately, the girls who, in their insane “affliction”, spread accusations wherever they could, also stuck with Rebecca, who was eventually hanged along with her sister, Mary Eastey, and all the others.
May they always be remembered and honored, in every place and in every time.


Il secondo schema prosegue la mia serie dedicata alle Streghe Storiche e raffigura un’altra delle più famose donne accusate di stregoneria a Salem, Rebecca Nurse. A differenza di molte altre accusate, Rebecca era una donna benestante e molto devota, tanto che il suo arresto suscitò non poca sorpresa e dubbi sulla reale colpevolezza. Purtroppo le ragazzine che, nella loro folle “afflizione”, spargevano accuse ovunque potessero, si impuntarono anche su Rebecca, che alla fine venne impiccata insieme a sua sorella, Mary Eastey, e a tutte le altre.
Che siano sempre ricordate e onorate, in ogni luogo e in ogni tempo.

Witches Tea Time e Bloody Mary

Good morning dear Stitchers,
on this cold and rainy autumn day I am happy to present you the first two patterns for this season, obviously dedicated to Halloween. The first one quickly became one of my favorites, and I hope you like it as much as I do.
As the moon rises, among white pumpkins and floating candles, two sisters witches sip a magical tea, accompanying it to a slice of cake. It is the magical Witches Tea Time, shared between a potion and a spell, and who knows what secrets the two witches will be talking about… certainly they are preparing for their night flight to peaks and clearings, to celebrate the magical Halloween night… Their night.

Buongiorno care Ricamine,
in questa fredda e piovosa giornata autunnale sono felice di presentarvi i primi due schemi per questa stagione, ovviamente dedicati ad Halloween. Il primo è diventato subito uno dei miei preferiti, e spero che piaccia a voi quanto piace a me.
Mentre sorge la luna, fra candide zucche e candele fluttuanti, due streghe sorelle sorseggiano un tè magico, accompagnandolo a una fetta di torta. È la magica ora del Tè delle Streghe, condiviso fra una pozione e un incantesimo, e chissà di quali segreti staranno parlando le due streghe… di certo si stanno preparando al loro volo notturno verso vette e radure, a festeggiare la magica notte di Halloween… la Loro notte.


These two little witches, different yet similar as two sisters can be, have entered my heart and I believe that other patterns will be created on them… something is already boiling in the pot, indeed, in the cauldron!

Queste due streghine, diverse eppure simili così come possono esserlo due sorelle, mi sono entrate nel cuore e credo che nasceranno altri schemi su di loro… qualcosa bolle già in pentola, anzi, nel calderone!


The second pattern is intentionally creepy as all those in my Legends for Halloween and Little Horrors series, and this year it is dedicated to the scary Bloody Mary. Legend tells that if her spirit is summoned in front of a mirror, by saying her name three times, lit only by a candle, her ghost appears to kill anyone who has summoned it wishes… but you have to be very careful, Bloody Mary is not foolish… sometimes to end up under her lethal hands is the very one who evoked it…

Il secondo schema è inquietante come tutti quelli delle serie Legends for Halloween e Little Horrors, e quest’anno è dedicato alla spaventosa Bloody Mary. La leggenda vuole che se si evoca il suo spirito davanti ad uno specchio, pronunciando il suo nome tre volte, illuminate solo da una candela, il fantasma appaia per uccidere chiunque chi lo ha evocato desideri… però bisogna stare molto attente, Bloody Mary non è sciocca… e certe volte a finire sotto le sue mani letali è proprio colei o colui che l’ha evocata…


Bloody Mary is the Phantom of the Mirror, so on these nights leading up to Halloween, beware of mirrors… and those who live beyond their deceptive surface… ;)

Bloody Mary è il Fantasma dello Specchio, per cui, in queste notti che portano ad Halloween, fate attenzione agli specchi… e a chi abita oltre la loro ingannevole superficie… ;)


These are the first two patterns for this season, but two more will be arriving next week. If you loved my first Salem pattern and her Bridget Bishop, you probably won’t be disappointed with these other two that carry on both the history and the style. I love them very much, I hope you will like them.

Autumn Fox, Poirot and a Tiny Bird

Dear Stitchers,
while waiting to dedicate completely myself to Halloween, I would like to present you these three patterns that I loved designing and finishing. The first one, in all autumnal style, welcomes this September and follows my new line dedicated to bookmarks and animals, which I hope will continue for a long time, because the ideas are many and all really sweet and fun.
After the first set of bookmarks dedicated to bees, this is the first one that accompany the bookmark with an ornament and a small pin cushion, which you can also realize as a needle book. To welcome the first autumn air and the first falling leaves, there is a very sweet and soft fox, offered in two slightly different versions. The fox is very much in love with autumn, so much so that its fur recalls the color of the redder and coppery leaves. She likes to watch them twirl in the air and gently settle on the ground, and above all she loves hiding, camouflaging, among the trunks and piles of leaves, popping out when least expected.


Care Ricamine,
in attesa di dedicarmi completamente ad Halloween, vorrei presentarvi questi tre schemi che ho amato molto disegnare e realizzare. Il primo, tutto autunnale, dà il benvenuto a questo settembre, e segue la mia nuova linea dedicata ai segnalibri e agli animaletti, che mi auguro proseguirà a lungo, perché le idee sono tante e tutte davvero dolci e divertenti.
Dopo il primo set di segnalibri dedicati alle api, questo è il primo che accompagna il segnalibro a un ornament e a un piccolo puntaspilli autunnale, che però potete confezionare anche come porta aghi. A dare il benvenuto alla prima aria d’autunno e alle prime foglie cadenti, c’è una dolcissima e morbidissima volpina, proposta in due versioni leggermente diverse. La volpina è molto innamorata dell’autunno, tanto che il suo pelo richiama il colore delle foglie più rosse e ramate. A lei piace guardarle volteggiare nell’aria e posarsi delicatamente a terra, e soprattutto adora nascondersi, mimetizzandosi, fra i tronchi e i cumuli di foglie, sbucando fuori quando meno ce lo si aspetta.


The second pattern has been waiting to come out for some months, and is dedicated to one of my favorite characters, Agatha Christie’s shrewd and likeable detective, Hercule Poirot. I admit it, I watch and re-watch his films again and again, and I find in Poirot such a pleasant company that I just can’t help it. His little gray cells are unbeatable, and as is well known, Poirot is never wrong – he is always keen to remember it.
The pattern is very simple but I hope you enjoy it and that it can keep you company, perhaps sipping a good cup of tea, and watching, with one eye on embroidery and one on the screen, one of the episodes of his fantastic television series.


Il secondo schema era in attesa di uscire da alcuni mesi, ed è dedicato a uno dei miei personaggi preferiti, il sagace e simpatico detective di Agatha Christie, Hercule Poirot. Lo ammetto, guardo e riguardo i suoi film a ripetizione, e trovo in Poirot una compagnia talmente piacevole che non posso proprio farne a meno. Le sue celluline grigie sono imbattibili, e come ben si sa, Poirot non sbaglia mai – ci tiene sempre a ricordarlo lui stesso.
Lo schema è molto semplice ma spero vi diverta e possa farvi compagnia, magari sorseggiando una buona tazza di tè, e guardando, con un occhio al ricamo e uno allo schermo, una delle puntate della sua fantastica serie televisiva.


The third pattern is a very tiny gem. I wanted to design and stitch in a few versions a very tiny bird, tiny enough to fit in one hand. I wanted it to be pearl gray, and that it could be embellished with the sweetest, most delicate and elegant decorations. I wanted it to be perfect for giving small gifts to friends, or even wedding favors and little gifts, and so it is. This tiny, tiny bird, a symbol of love and kindness, was born, and is available to all of you at an equally tiny cost.
The pattern includes both versions, with hand-dyed yarn from The Gentle Art on antique white linen, and with simple white yarn on hand-dyed gray linen. The second version is embellished with three little pearls.


Il terzo schema è una chicca davvero piccolissima. Volevo disegnare e ricamare in più versioni un uccellino piccolissimo, tanto piccolo da stare in una mano. Volevo che fosse color grigio perla, e che potesse essere abbellito con le decorazioni più dolci, delicate ed eleganti. Volevo che fosse perfetto per fare piccoli regali alle amiche, o addirittura bomboniere e pensierini, e così è stato. Questo piccolo, piccolissimo uccellino, simbolo di amore e gentilezza, è nato, ed è disponibile per tutte voi ad un costo altrettanto piccolo.
Lo schema comprende entrambe le versioni, con filato tinto a mano da The Gentle Art su lino bianco antico, e con semplice filato bianco su lino tinto a mano, grigio. La seconda versione è abbellita con tre piccole perle.

I hope you like these new patterns and that they keep you company in these first days of September, when the leaves begin to turn yellow, when it is nice to spend a few moments embroidering in front of an episode of Poirot, when a tiny bird of the color of fog and pearls chirps, a gift made from the heart to the closest friends.

Spero che questi nuovi schemi vi piacciano e che vi facciano compagnia in questi primi giorni di settembre, quando le foglie iniziano ad ingiallire, quando è bello passare qualche momento ricamando davanti a una puntata di Poirot, quando cinguetta un piccolissimo uccellino color della nebbia e delle perle, dono fatto col cuore alle amiche più care.

The Wicked Witch of the West

Dear Stitchers,
Finally is ready the last pattern for this Halloween... and it does not need much explanation. It is obviously inspired by the wonderful film The Wizard of Oz, and in particular by the very famous photograph of that time, which depicts the scary Wicked Witch of the West with her shadow behind her. I drew my full-length version – without the shadow – so it would be nicer to make and hang, during the Halloween period.

finalmente è pronto l'ultimo schema per questo Halloween... e non ha bisogno di molte spiegazioni. È ispirato ovviamente al meraviglioso film Il Mago di Oz, e in particolare alla famosissima fotografia dell'epoca, che raffigura la malvagia e spaventosa Strega dell'Ovest con la sua ombra alle sue spalle. Ho disegnato la mia versione a figura intera, così che fosse più carina da realizzare e appendere, durante il periodo di Halloween.

Halloween 2021 Collection

Dear Stitchers,
finally my new patterns dedicated to Halloween and to the period in which is celebrated the invisible, the realm of the dead and the subtle entities that cross the veil to visit us - some beneficial, others a little less – are ready!
This year I will introduce you five new patterns, one of which will arrive shortly with its frame.
The first pattern I want to present you is fun and playful, in fact it was inspired to me by a child. In a somewhat restless cemetery, during the night of Halloween, all the most jokey and playful ghosts come out at the stroke of midnight, each from his grave, to have a big party! The password to be able to participate, of course, is only one: BOO!

ecco finalmente pronti i miei nuovi schemi dedicati ad Halloween e al periodo in cui si celebra l'invisibile, il regno dei morti e le entità sottili che superano il velo per farci visita – alcune benefiche, altre un po' meno.
Quest'anno vi presenterò cinque nuovi schemi, uno dei quali arriverà a breve con la sua cornice realizzata appositamente.
Il primo schema che vi voglio presentare è divertente e giocoso, infatti mi è stato ispirato da un bambino. In un cimitero un po' irrequieto, durante la notte di Halloween, tutti i fantasmi più burloni e giocosi escono allo scoccare della mezzanotte, ciascuno dalla sua tomba, per fare una grande festa! La parola d'ordine per potervi partecipare, naturalmente, è una sola: BOO!

Lo schema comprende anche tre piccoli ornaments che potete realizzare e appendere al vostro Albero di Halloween!


The second pattern I want to present you is part of my beloved Little Horrors Series, which this year is dedicated to none other than Jack the Ripper - light stuff!
He was a character I wanted to portray for years, even if I feared it was a bit excessive, but I know that many of you, lovers of the macabre like me, will appreciate.
The pattern depicts Jack next to the typical nineteenth-century London street lamps, after committing one of his heinous murders in Whitechapel. According to research, which never led to his identification and capture, Jack may have been a doctor, given the precision with which he performed his grisly interventions on the poor victims. Hence the elegant clothing and above all the doctor's case at his feet.
His victims, all five poor prostitutes and abandoned by the world, are still remembered and honored today.

Il secondo schema che vi voglio presentare rientra nella mia amata Little Horrors Series - la serie dei Piccoli Horrors – che quest'anno è dedicata a niente meno che Jack Lo Squartatore – roba leggera!
Era un personaggio che volevo rappresentare da anni, anche se temevo fosse un po' eccessivo, ma so che molte di voi, amanti come me del macabro, apprezzeranno.
Lo schema raffigura Jack accanto ai tipici lampioni della Londra ottocentesca, dopo aver commesso uno dei suoi efferati omicidi a Whitechapel. Secondo le ricerche, che non hanno mai portato alla sua identificazione e alla sua cattura, Jack poteva essere stato un medico, data la precisione con cui compiva i suoi macabri interventi sulle povere vittime. Da qui l'abbigliamento elegante e soprattutto la valigetta da medico ai suoi piedi.
Le sue vittime, tutte e cinque prostitute povere e abbandonate dal mondo, sono ancora oggi ricordate e onorate.


The third pattern is the second one of my History Witches Series, dedicated to women accused of witchcraft in the dark ages, and sacrificed because of human madness.
The first witch drawn a year ago celebrated the memory of Bridget Bishop, a famous witch from Salem, Massachusetts; and the one to which I dedicated the design this year, on the other hand, is a witch who is part of Italian history - I wanted to pay homage to one of the witches who are part of my country - the beautiful Bellezza Orsini.
Isabella – called Bellezza – Orsini, lived in the early 1500s in Lazio, was a servant of the rich Orsini family – from which she took her name – and after numerous complaints by women and men who disliked her, she was accused of witchcraft. One of her faults was that she was very, very beautiful. She loved to wear red at a time when this color was considered unbecoming, and perhaps she really had some real connection with witchcraft, in the sense of a cult of ancient origin.

Il terzo schema che vi presento è il secondo della mia serie History Witches, dedicata alle donne accusate di stregoneria nei secoli bui, e sacrificate per colpa della follia umana.
La prima strega disegnata un anno fa celebrava la memoria di Bridget Bishop, famosa strega di Salem, in Massachusetts; e quella a cui mi sono dedicata quest'anno, invece, è una strega che fa parte della storia italiana – ci tenevo a rendere omaggio a una delle streghe che fanno parte del mio paese – la bellissima Bellezza Orsini.
Isabella – detta Bellezza – Orsini, visse agli inizi del 1500 nel Lazio, fu servitrice della ricca famiglia Orsini – da cui prese il nome – e a seguito di numerose denunce da parte di donne e uomini che l'avevano in antipatia, venne accusata di stregoneria. Una delle sue colpe era quella di essere molto, molto bella. Amava vestire di rosso in un'epoca in cui questo colore era considerato disdicevole, e forse qualche reale legame con la stregoneria, nel senso di culto legato alla natura, lo ebbe davvero.


During the period in which any kind of confessions were extracted from her by torture, Bellezza wrote several pages of notebook, proving to be a cultured woman, as women capable of writing at her time were few.
At the end of her strength after the interminable and repeated interrogations, the excruciating torture, and the nearby death sentence, Bellezza killed herself, piercing her throat with a nail.
Today we still celebrate her memory.
I hope that she can be known and honored even beyond Italy, and is this the reason I wanted to dedicate this design to her. I hope you will like it.

Durante il periodo in cui le vennero estorte con la tortura confessioni di ogni genere, Bellezza scrisse diverse pagine di quaderno, dimostrandosi una donna acculturata, in quanto le donne capaci di scrivere al tempo erano poche.
Allo stremo delle sue forze dopo gli interminabili e ripetuti interrogatori, le torture lancinanti, e la vicina condanna a morte, Bellezza si uccise da sola, trafiggendosi la gola con un chiodo.
Oggi celebriamo ancora la sua memoria.
Mi auguro che possa essere conosciuta e onorata anche al di là dell'Italia, per questo le ho voluto dedicare questo schema, che spero vi possa piacere.


The fourth pattern I present you, is part of my Legends for Halloween Series, taking up the same style - which I love very much. This time the drawing is dedicated to a little known woman who lived on Edisto Island, South Carolina, in 1800.
Julia Legare, that was her name, was a woman who, at a still young age, contracted a disease, perhaps diphtheria, from which she died... or so it was thought.
She was immediately buried in the Legare family mausoleum, in the Presbyterian Church of Edisto Island, and the door that closed the small mortuary building was sealed.
Some time later, the mausoleum was reopened, perhaps to bury another member of the Legare family, and with great horror the decomposed remains of Julia were found behind the door, which showed signs of scratches and blows from the inside. Julia had been buried alive.

Il quarto schema che vi presento, entra nella mia serie Legends for Halloween, riprendendone lo stile – che amo moltissimo. Questa volta il disegno è dedicato a una donna poco conosciuta, che visse a Edisto Island, nella Carolina del Sud, nel 1800. Julia Legare, questo era il suo nome, era una donna che, in età ancora giovane, contrasse una malattia, forse la difterite, per la quale morì... o almeno così si pensava.
Venne subito sepolta nel mausoleo della famiglia Legare, nella chiesa presbiteriana di Edisto Island, e la porta che chiudeva il piccolo edificio mortuario venne sigillata.
Qualche tempo dopo, il mausoleo venne riaperto, forse per seppellire un altro componente della famiglia Legare, e con grande orrore vennero trovati i resti decomposti di Julia dietro la porta, che dalla parte interna presentava segni di graffi e colpi. Julia era stata sepolta viva.


From that day on, no one was able to close the door of the mausoleum. Despite repeated attempts, the door opened by itself, remaining wide open. It is said that Julia's ghost, who may still be wandering around the cemetery, keeps the door of her mausoleum open, so that no one can live her sorrow anymore.
In the drawing I represented Julia as a ghost floating next to the Legare family mausoleum, with many candles that honor her story and her sad untimely death.

Da quel giorno, nessuno riuscì più a chiudere la porta del mausoleo. Nonostante i ripetuti tentativi, la porta si apriva da sola, rimanendo spalancata. Si dice che il fantasma di Julia, che forse vaga ancora per il cimitero, tenga aperta la porta del proprio mausoleo, così che nessuno possa più fare una fine terribile come la sua.
Nel disegno ho rappresentato Julia come un fantasma che fluttua accanto al mausoleo della famiglia Legare, e molte candele che rendono onore alla sua storia e alla sua triste morte prematura.

Salem Trials, Bridget Bishop 1692, Erzsebet Bathory and The Pumpkin Night

Dear Stitchers,
with my usual delay, I present you the new patterns designed for this period, between Autumn, Halloween and the days in which the dead are honored.
By this last anniversary are inspired my first two patterns, both centered on the events of the Salem Witch Hunt, and its Trials.
Salem Trials - The Witch Hunt is the concentrate of these events, and it is also one of the patterns I personally love the most among those I created until now.
I wanted to represent four of the various witches who were condemned and hanged for witchcraft, while in reality they were just poor women on whom episodes of hysteria and religious fanaticism were unleashed.
Drawn in Puritan period clothes, one of them is the poor Caribbean slave Tituba, you will recognize her by the beautiful dark skin.
The lower part of the pattern reproduces a house similar to one that became famous during the trials, the gallows, and the meeting place of Salem Village.
In the center, a short phrase remembers the women victims of the trials:
“In memory of all the women who were executed during the Salem hunt”.


Care Ricamine,
con il mio solito ritardo, vi presento i nuovi schemi disegnati per questo periodo, fra l’autunno, Halloween e i giorni in cui si onorano i morti. Proprio a quest’ultima ricorrenza sono ispirati i miei due primi schemi, entrambi incentrati sulle vicende della caccia alle streghe di Salem, ovvero ai suoi processi.
Salem Trials – The Witch Hunt è proprio il concentrato di queste vicende, ed è anche uno degli schemi che personalmente amo di più fra quelli che ho creato sinora.
Ho voluto rappresentare quattro delle varie streghe che furono condannate e impiccate per stregoneria, che erano in realtà solo povere donne su cui si erano scatenati episodi di isteria e fanatismo religioso.
Disegnate in abiti d’epoca puritana, una di loro è la povera schiava caraibica Tituba, la riconoscerete dalla bella pelle scura.
La parte inferiore dello schema riproduce una casa simile a una di quelle divenute famose durante i processi, il patibolo, e il luogo d’incontro di Salem Village.
Al centro del ricamo, una breve frase ricorda le donne vittime dei processi:
“In memoria di tutte le donne che furono giustiziate durante la caccia di Salem”.


Still close to the Salem theme, which I propose to draw again in the future, is the second pattern, which portrays the first woman who was sentenced to hang: Bridget Bishop.
Born in England, around 1632, she emigrated to America and settled in Salem. She was widowed three times and married a fourth time, but rumors about her began to swirl around the time of the hunt. Any weirdness that happened, attributable to fortuity, was attributed to her – and to the other women involved - and the fact that she often wore red dresses - not forbidden - helped to put her in a bad light. Even accused of appearing in spirit in the bedrooms of sleeping men, and of hitting and cursing them, she was then arrested, and repeatedly interrogated. Her grumpy and spiteful attitude did not help her, and the poor woman, at the time in her sixties, was then hanged. It was June 10, 1692.
This pattern dedicated to her also starts my new series “Historical Witches”, in which I will try to draw several women, both famous and less known, who were accused of witchcraft in various parts of the world.


Sempre vicino al tema di Salem, che mi propongo di disegnare di nuovo in futuro, è il secondo schema, che ritrae la prima donna che fu condannata all’impiccagione: Bridget Bishop.
Nata in Inghilterra, nel 1632 circa, emigrò in America e si stabilì a Salem. Rimase vedova tre volte e si sposò una quarta volta, ma le voci su di lei cominciarono a girare velocemente nel periodo della caccia. Ogni stranezza che capitava, imputabile al caso, venne attribuita a lei – e alle altre donne implicate – e il fatto che lei usasse portare spesso abiti rossi – non proibiti – contribuirono a metterla in cattiva luce.
Addirittura accusata di apparire in spirito nelle camere degli uomini dormienti, e di colpirli e maledirli, quindi venne arrestata, e ripetutamente interrogata. Il suo atteggiamento scontroso e dispettoso non la aiutò, e la povera donna, all’epoca sessantenne, venne quindi impiccata. Era il 10 giugno 1692.
Questo schema dedicato a lei dà anche inizio alla mia nuova serie “Historical Witches”, nella quale cercherò di disegnare diverse donne, sia famose, sia meno conosciute, che vennero accusate di stregoneria in varie parti del mondo.


Let’s leave this sad theme, referable to a very dark period of our history, and… let’s move straight to the macabre! In fact, I resume my beloved series “Legends for Halloween”, even if in this case it is not a legend, but real history.
I hope I haven’t exaggerated, but as a lover of horror stories, this year I spared myself. Therefore, I wanted to draw a subject that, known when I was a young girl thanks to a board game, in which the mysterious “Vampire Elizabeth Bathory” was a fascinating character, my favorite one, I explored her once I grew up.
She was actually the rich and beautiful Hungarian Countess Erzsebet Bathory - this is the exact name - born in Nyirbator in 1560 and then raised in Transylvania - yes, in Transylvania.
Coming from a family in which the tendency to mental illness, including schizophrenia, was very pronounced, Erzsebet grew up in the same way, showing signs of imbalance from a very young age. She witnessed cruel and merciless scenes, was married just eleven, and grew up giving free rein to her insane and sadistic tendencies.
Indulged by her servants eager to please her, she then came to believe, once she became a woman, that by bathing in the blood of girls she could remain young and beautiful forever.
This led her to kill between 100 and 300 young women, although from a mysterious diary belonged to her, which has been lost, it seems that the number is much higher, about 650. She had even set up a sort of school for aristocratic girls in her castle, where initially she proposed to educate and cultivate their good manners, and then made them disappear.


Lasciamo le tematiche un po’ tristi e riferibili a un periodo davvero molto buio della nostra storia, e… diamoci direttamente al macabro! Riprende infatti la mia serie “Legends for Halloween”, anche se in questo caso non si tratta di una leggenda, ma di vera e propria Storia.
Spero di non aver esagerato, ma da amante di racconti horror, quest’anno non mi sono risparmiata. Ho voluto disegnare un soggetto che, conosciuto da ragazzina grazie a un gioco da tavolo, nel quale la misteriosa “Vampira Elizabeth Bathory” era un personaggio affascinante, il mio preferito, ho approfondito una volta cresciuta.
Lei era in realtà la ricca e bellissima Contessa ungherese Erzsebet Bathory – questo il nome esatto – nata a Nyirbator nel 1560 e poi allevata in Transilvania – sì, proprio in Transilvania.
Proveniente da una famiglia in cui la tendenza a malattie mentali, fra cui la schizofrenia, era molto pronunciata, Erzsebet crebbe nello stesso modo, dando segni di squilibrio sin da piccolissima. Assistette a scene crudeli e spietate, venne fatta sposare appena undicenne, e crebbe dando libero sfogo alle sue tendenze insane e sadiche.
Assecondata dai suoi servitori desiderosi di compiacerla, arrivò quindi a credere, una volta divenuta donna, che bagnandosi nel sangue delle fanciulle sarebbe potuta rimanere giovane e bella per sempre.
Questo la portò a uccidere e far uccidere fra le 100 e le 300 giovani donne, anche se da un suo misterioso diario, andato perso, sembra che il numero sia molto più alto, circa 650. Aveva addirittura istituito nel suo castello una sorta di scuola per fanciulle aristocratiche, dove inizialmente si proponeva di istruire e coltivare le buone maniere delle giovani, e poi le faceva sparire.


Without going into details, I will limit to saying that she bathed in the blood of virgins, but she also used it in face ointments, and it seems that she came to drink it. This made her go down in history as a real vampire, and earned her the nickname “Bloody Countess”.
Finally discovered by the Catholic Church, she was then stopped along with four of her helpers, and ended up in the end that one could easily imagine. She was walled up alive in a small room, atop one of the towers of her castle, with only a hole through which the food passed. She slowly stopped eating, and died four years after her sentence, on August 21, 1614.
A real macabre story, which I guess will not be appreciated by everyone, but which I wanted to draw and made as pleasant as possible, especially for those who, like me, love this kind of “bedtime stories”.

Senza scendere nei particolari, mi limito a dire che nel sangue delle vergini faceva il bagno, ma lo utilizzava anche in unguenti per il viso, e pare che arrivasse a berlo. Questo la fece passare alla storia come una vera e propria vampira, e le valse il soprannome di “Contessa Sanguinaria”.
Scoperta infine dalla Chiesa cattolica, venne quindi fermata insieme a quattro suoi aiutanti, e fece la fine che si potrebbe facilmente immaginare. Venne murata viva in una piccola stanza, in cima a una delle torri del suo castello, con solo un foro dal quale le passavano il cibo. Lentamente smise di mangiare, e morì quattro anni dopo la condanna, il 21 agosto 1614.
Una vera e propria storia macabra, che immagino non sarà apprezzata da tutte, ma che ci tenevo a disegnare e che ho reso in modo il più possibile piacevole, specialmente per chi, come me, ama questo genere di "storie della buonanotte".


Leaving, really this time, the grim themes, I present you my fourth pattern for this Halloween, also one of my favorites. The colors, the atmosphere, the shapes, everything recalls joy, serenity, lightness, but also a bit of the mystery of the Autumn days and nights, close to Halloween.
The pattern is in fact dedicated to The Pumpkin Night. A good and kind witch wanders around her garden, naturally filled with pumpkins - and what could a witch grow? - to choose the most beautiful, the perfect one to be carved and placed on the windowsill of his stone house, with a beautiful candle lit inside.
The ravens help her, fluttering here and there, while the moon and the stars shines in the sky.


Lasciando, davvero questa volta, le tematiche più truci, vi presento il mio quarto schema per questo Halloween, anche questo uno dei miei preferiti. I colori, l’atmosfera, le forme, tutto richiama l’allegria, la serenità, la leggerezza, ma anche un po’ di mistero, dei giorni, e anche delle notti, autunnali e vicine ad Halloween.
Lo schema, infatti, è proprio dedicato alla Notte delle Zucche. Una buona e gentile strega si aggira nel suo orto, naturalmente colmo di zucche – e cosa potrebbe mai coltivare una strega? – per scegliere la più bella, quella perfetta per essere intagliata e posta sul davanzale della sua casetta di pietra, con una bella candela accesa al suo interno.
I corvi la aiutano, svolazzando qua e là, mentre in cielo splende la luce contornata di stelle.

These are my new patterns for this Halloween, and even if I know I have touched the “limit of the allowed”, especially in a field that is not illustration but is cross stitch, I hope you like them and that they give many hours of pleasant stitching, surrounded by candles, scented with dried leaves and apple pie, heated with a warm cinnamon infusion.

Questi sono quindi i miei nuovi schemi per questo Halloween, e anche se so di aver sfiorato un pochino il “limite del concesso”, specialmente in un campo che non è l’illustrazione ma è il punto croce, spero che vi piacciano e che vi regalino qualche ora di ricamo piacevole, illuminato dalle candele, profumato di foglie secche e di torta di mele, scaldato da un caldo infuso alla cannella.
