Florence Nightingale, The Lady with the Lamp

Dear Stitchers,
before starting to work on new Halloween designs – all sketched and ready to become patterns – I really want to present this design to you, born in early summer and finished early august. I waited for the first cool days to introduce it to you because it is a more autumnal design.
The subject is a historical figure that I love very much: the British Florence Nightingale, called "The Lady with the Lamp".
Florence is the Mother of Nursing, the first woman who, moved by a powerful vocation, invented the figure of the Nurse in the mid 1800.
Born in Florence, the city from which she got her name – like her sister, who was born in Naples and was called Parthenope – she lived her life with the sole purpose of studying, knowing, and giving shape to the inspiration that always animated her: take care of the sick and injured.
In this mission she was initially hindered by her rich family, who wanted a different future for her, almost causing her to fall ill and suffer severe depressions, because she could not achieve what her soul required her. She was offered a good marriage by a man she loved and admired, but the love for her mission was stronger and she refused.

After several years, she finally managed to do what she was called for, and was able to put her art into practice in the Crimean war. She settled in the war hospital where the injured British soldiers were kept in very poor condition and began her work as a nurse, accompanied by other women who learned from her – sometimes very severely. In this way, she gave life to a figure that did not exist before: the Nurse, the one who literally “takes cares” of the sick; which the first doctors did not do and largely underestimated.
Thanks to her, who took care of cleaning, feeding and a series of essential actions for the survival of the wounded, two thirds of those who could have died, survived.
Florence also wrote some books, studied statistics, and despite her deductions and studies can be considered outdated today, she laid the foundations for the birth of an essential profession.

Florence Nightingale walked overnight in the lugubrious corridors of war hospitals, moving among the beds of the wounded, holding a luminous lamp in her hands.
She checked if they were clean, if they needed anything. She made sure that the fever fell, that the dirty bandages were changed, that the quality of the food was accurate and substantial.
So did her students and companions, and thanks to them many men who were near to death, lived.

From Florence were born the modern Nurses, who still do this admirable and essential job, and take care of those who need it most.

If you want to know Florence better, I highly recommend this little book – which is not as complex as others, much more detailed, but really well done – which you can read in a few hours:
Florence Nightingale: A Life From Beginning to End, della collana Hourly History
I hope you like this pattern as much as I do. See you soon with the new Halloween patterns!
