Sea Light

Good evening, dear Stitchers! This summer I dedicated a lot of time to bees, but I’m missing the freshness of a nautical pattern, as well as my beloved red-haired mermaids. So I decided to design a quick and easy pattern that you could even stitch on vacation. A fresh and cute last-minute pattern, and not devoid of meaning.
The Sea Light is certainly the lighthouse, but it’s also the symbol of something that, wherever we are, especially when we feel lost or disoriented, at the mercy of the waves and winds, helps us find our way and allows us to return home. The mermaid protects the Light of the Sea, as the guardian of the depths of the sea and of our inner light.
I hope you enjoy this little pattern, and that it brings light and guidance to every moment of your life, especially the difficult ones.

Sea World

Dear Stitchers,
the new pattern that I present to you today is entirely dedicated to the sea and its symbols, one for each different aspect. A symbol, the rudder, to navigate it and maintain the course on your journey; an animal, the seagull, which flies over the waters and fishes beneath their surface; a place, the lighthouse, which lights the way and leads home; a mythological creature, the mermaid, who governs its depths and protects it. The world of the sea, in all its nuances, between reality and legend, evoking its magic that is at times peaceful and hieratic, at times stormy and ruthless.

I have brought together what I love most about the sea in a composition that you can also stitch in a different way, creating four very cute ornaments.
I have this design very close to my heart, it appeared in my mind exactly as you see it, and I hope to have realized in the best possible way. I hope you like it, and that it brings a breath of fresh air into your homes and, if you will stitch it on holiday, in your relaxing days at the beach.

A hug to everyone! Happy summer and happy holidays!
Un abbraccio a tutte! Buona estate e buone vacanze!

Sea Pearl, Stars Animals, Bees and Honeys

Dear Stitchers,
with a little delay, mainly due to the renovation work we did at home which prevented me from working continuously on new projects, I finally present you the patterns of this bright and warm summer!
The first design is special and precious, and tells of a treasure that lives in the depths of the sea, but perhaps also within ourselves. The most precious treasure is hidden inside its shell, a pearl of the colors of the moon, which contains within itself the most magical essence of one’s being.

Carissime Ricamine,

The precious pearl is watched over by a tiny seahorse and starfish, but also by a very sweet mermaid, who holds out her hands to protect it from any danger.
It’s also our charge to find that pearl and protect it, to keep it alive and shining. Both in the boundless sea and within ourselves.

Tanto nello sconfinato mare, quanto dentro noi stesse.

The second pattern continues my beloved animals series, but this time it’s tinged with light! They are the Stars Animals, each linked to a particular constellation that accompanies it within its design. The constellations and therefore the animals that represent them are the Ursa Minor – Minor Bear, the Vulpecula – Little Fox, the Delphinus – Dolphin, the Columba – Dove, and finally he, the king of the constellations, Pegasus.

For added magic, you could even stitch them with glow-in-the-dark yarn. In this case I preferred to choose a very bright white that tends slightly to blue, to make well the brightness of the stars that shine in the sky at night.
Each constellation has its own message to bring and its magic to infuse... it’s up to us to listen to them and receive their luminous gifts.

The third pattern continues my famous and much loved series on bees. Every year I think I run out of ideas, and every year new ones come up, so much so that I have to dose them and postpone some to the following year! This first pattern that continues the series combines the kingdom of bees with the magic of the moon. Bees and the moon have always been connected in ancient myths.

In this drawing, which should have been called Honey Moon but which then “chose to be called” Blessed Bee, I wanted to include all the phases of the moon in three small patterns that you can create as you prefer: the triple moon, the full moon and the crescent, growing or waning moon. I created a pincushion, an ornament and a cute needlebook. The moon maiden of the larger pattern is the one who mediates between the world of the moon, that of the bees and ours. Her blessing is filled with light and love.

Finally the fourth pattern is the sweetest of all, literally. So, what’s your favorite honey? Mine is the acacia one, but I love them all, and I’ve tried so many!
In this design I wanted to represent the different types of honey, the best known and most appreciated, each with its own pretty jar: acacia, millefiori and obviously the chestnut.

How about embroidering them, accompanying the pleasant afternoon with a nice slice of toasted bread with a layer of sweet honey?
Together with the pattern you will also find some delicious and simple recipes to taste honey in different ways.

I hope you like the new patterns and that they always bring that touch of magic and happiness that you know so well – and I thank you for the beautiful messages you write to me, they are always a great gift for me.
I wish you a beautiful summer and I embrace you, one by one!

The Vikings and Grace O'Malley, the Irish Pirate Queen

Hello dear Stitchers!
Here I am with two more patterns for this wonderful summer 2021.
I promised myself that I would no longer design sailing ships, but... I couldn't do without them!
After my new Arctic Animals II and Hypatia of Alexandria, the third pattern I want to present you was a great undertaking, not only for me but also for my model stitcher Emanuela Dossetto, as it is the largest one I have created.
As you may have guessed, it is dedicated... to the Vikings!
I wanted to draw a blonde and proud and beautiful Viking queen seated on her throne, with the Shieldmaiden on her right and on her left a mighty Viking warrior. In the lower part, simpli it, the wonderful Viking Drakkar, with the dragon's head at the bow, the large sail and obviously the row of Viking shields, all different, faithfully reproduced according to traditional designs.
However, I want to pay particular attention to the symbols that I have carefully chosen to insert in the drawing.

Next to the Shieldmaiden I have chosen the rune Algiz, which represents Protection. Algiz protects, defends, it is the protective force that draws from our interiority, from our spirit. It is the inner shield, which the Shieldmaiden embodies and put into action. Next to the Warrior I placed the rune Ur or Uruz, which represents strength, endurance, primitive energy. Uruz is the courage you need in combact, but it also symbolizes good health, physical strength, and confidence in our potential and inner power.
Alongside the Viking Queen I chose two runes that represent the wisdom and wealth of knowing how to reign worthily:
Inguz is the rune of harmony, love, continuity of life, and of inner fulfillment in the highest and noblest way. It also represents the wisdom of the lineage, the family bond, the inheritance.
Jera is the rune of the harvest, of abundance, it represents the seasonal cyclicality, the change that leads to growth, ripening and harvesting of fruits. It represents the rich maternal Earth, which the queen must represent as she embodys Earth sovereignty.
Finally, in the lower part, on the left, you will see the mighty Helm of Awe, a symbol of great strength and protection. There is no certain information about its presence within the ancient Norse mythology, and about its real tracing before the battles. It is more likely that it was created in recent times, but its shape, which recalls the power that branches out from a steady and constant center - such as the radiant sun - has roots in the forms of ancient symbols and in the Norse runes. Next to it, a traditional Celtic knot recalls the eternal cyclicity, the continuity of life, the divine energy that flows without ever stopping, making all nature alive.

The fourth pattern I want to show you is dedicated to pirates, or better, to a great Irish piratess who lived from 1530 to 1603:
Grace O'Malley, whose original Irish name was Gráinne Ní Mháille - also known as Gráinne Mhaol or Granuaile – was the twentieth queen of Umhaill (County Mayo at the present-day) in Ireland, and head of the O'Malley clan. Born in 1530, she was a great revolutionary, whose main occupation was piracy. For this she was nicknamed the "Queen of the Connemara Sea" or "Queen of the Connacht Sea".
It is said that when she was little more than a child she wanted to embark with her father to Spain, but he refused her, telling her that her long hair would be tied to the ropes of the ship. Then she took a knife and cut them off. So followed her father and from that day she took the nickname "Mhaol", which means "bald" or "with little hair", although her hair (presumably red) grew again.
During her life as a pirate she went against the English crown, but she also had a peacemaker meeting with Elizabeth I, during which the two queens exchanged promises to coexist peacefully.
She allegedly died in 1603, the same year as Elizabeth I. A statue of her, with a proud gaze, is installed at Westport House, County Mayo.

Grace was a strong and independent woman, queen of the seas and clan chief. In my drawing I wanted to interpret her and play a little with her appearance, making her similar to the classic piratess, with the sailing ship with black flags, the flag with Jolly Roger and the treasure chest.

With Jolly Roger I wanted to create a nice pincushion, while with the chest I created a little free pattern for you, that reminds something essential for me: Find your Treasure. A Treasure which is perhaps not made of gold coins, but which is equally hidden in the depths of ourselves, in our inner ocean, and is just waiting to be found, so it can make us rich in a more precious way than the one given by money.
To download the free pattern click here: Find your Treasure

I hope you like the new patterns, and that they bring freshness to your summer. And I'll see you soon, with some other little surprises that, I'm sure, many of you will appreciate ;)
A big hug to you all,
Laura

Laura

The Little Mermaid, Little Red Riding Hood and Polaris, The North Star - Summer Patterns 2019

Dear Stitchers,
here finally are the new patterns, and I hope they will brighten your summer!
You will surely recognize immediately the first and the second ones: they are two of the most famous and most loved fairy tales in the world.
I had already dedicated a tiny pattern to The Little Mermaid some years ago, but I wanted to re-propose a larger and more elaborate second version.
The quote I included is taken from the original fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, and is simply perfect for the drawing. It is reflected in face of the Little Mermaid who looks at the prince’s ship with a heart full of desire.

That particular and irresistible desire to reach the place where she feels she really belongs to, a feeling that perhaps also unites many of us.
My version of The Little Mermaid focuses precisely on this wish, on this deep and poignant need to become part of what one loves and recognizes as her/his real home.

The second fairy tale is of course Little Red Riding Hood, with the little girl, the granny’s house and… the wolf! All those who have seen my pattern before I published it told me that my wolf looks good, affectionate, that it is not at all threatening and fearful. Well, that’s right! I hope you will forgive my “artistic concession”, I love wolves too much to represent them as the “bad beasts” that many people want them to be.

My version of Little Red Riding Hood, instead, is an invitation to reconsider this bad stereotype, to start again to love nature, even if it is wild and sometimes dangerous, and above all to treat wolves in a different way. To respect them and love them as they deserve.
I am happy to tell you that a portion of the proceeds from the sale of this pattern will be donated to wolf conservation campaigns.

A rispettarli e amarli come meritano.

Finally, the third pattern is born from one of my great passion, the stars, and at the same time it comes from an affectionate collaboration with a friend and colleague, Cassandra, designer of Fairywool in the Wood.
I really wanted to draw a pattern about the stars, including some of my favorite constellations, and I wanted to dedicate it to my heart star, Polaris, the North Star that guides sailors and wayfarers home at night; and also Cassandra wanted to dedicate a pattern to stars, realizing it in a totally different way.

So we decided to work on the same theme, the stars, but in two completely different ways, having a lot of fun and demonstrating how it is possible - and even extremely beautiful - to ban competition between designers and, instead, support each other, leaving free expression to ours own inspiration and creativity.
If you respect the work of others and work on your own ideas, you can create thousands of different creative expressions from the same theme, in a spirit of friendship and alliance, rather than with a desire for exclusivity and competition.
To see the pattern Cassandra designed you must have a little patience, because it will be one of her new releases for the Italian market “Fili Senza Tempo”, in September, and it will be a great surprise!

The constellations that I represented in Polaris - and that you will also find listed in the colors summary sheet, if you want to buy it and stitch this pattern - are all real, and are visible in the sky exactly as shown here. Starting from the left side, and continuing upwards to the right side, the constellations represented are:
Coma Berenices, Canes Venatici, Cassiopea, Canis Minor, Cygnus, Triangulum, Monoceros, Pleiades (The Seven Sisters), Equuleus, Corona Borealis, Vulpecula
On her dress, the bright Polaris Queen has the Northern Star constellation: Ursa Minor

I hope that you like these new patterns and that they will bring freshness and fun to your summer days.
I wish to all of you a great summer and happy holidays!

The Lighthouse

Dear Stitchers,
ahead of the new summer patterns, that I’m designing in these days and that will be ready for the beginning of July, I would like to present you this little pattern that I designed a year ago and set aside for this year. It was ready, it only needed some retouches and to be stitched, and I admit that I love how it came out.

A year ago I looked for a quote from Virginia Woolf to accompany the lighthouse, taken from her work "To the Lighthouse", but not having found something that struck me, I preferred to draw inspiration from another meaning – the lighthouse as an inner light that illuminates the way for ourselves and for others – to create a phrase of my own.
And this is precisely the meaning of this design, the light of the lighthouse which, projecting itself at great distances, pierces the darkest night, and the thickest mist, and guides the travelers towards a safe harbor, towards home, towards their own luminous truth.

I hope you like this little pattern, very quick to make and perfect to be taken to the sea, maybe stitching it on the beach, and that you can find in its meaning something that is of help and comfort in your everyday life.

I immediately start again to work on the great new entries of this summer 2019, which I’m sure you’ll love.
A hug to all and see you soon!

The Mermaid Realm and Little Birds Calendar - August - Yellow Wagtail

Dear Stitchers,
The patterns that I’m presenting to you today are the last two ones for this summer, which was for me very funny and creative.
The first one remained unfinished for years. I drawn the Mermaid Realm about four years ago, but I never finished and realized it. I decided to do it this year, and I'm very happy to have done it, because I love it.

The drawing tells about a wonderful enchanted realm, hidden under the waves of the sea, where the mermaids live in harmony with the other sea creatures in their beautiful castle made of cristal and coral.
At the entrance of the castle, the Guardian Mermaid with the trident ensures that nothing disharmonious or negative crosses the threshold of the magical marine realm, where peace and sisterhood reign.

The second pattern is the one that many of you are waiting for, and it is obviously in the new bird of August. Its name is Yellow Wagtail and it is a small bird with sunny, warm and lively colors, which loves to flit between fields of wheat, corn and sunny meadows. I believe that there is no more suitable bird to represent the month of harvesting and cereal maturation.

I hope that you like the new creations! I wish you a happy summer and lovely holidays :)
See you in September, with all the Halloween new entries!
A big hug and happy stitches!

Ocean Animals

Dear Stitchers and Friends,
since you had so much appreciated my Winter Animals, I decided to create a set of summer patterns dedicated to the animals that live in the ocean, in honor of the magic of the sea and its protection. So I introduce you to my Ocean Animals.
In the depths of the waters, inside the secret caves, the wonderful corals and the green algae live many creatures. I chose my favorites: the Dolphin, the Seal, the Turtle and the Seahorse.

They are four little friends that you can stitch quickly on the beach, or between a walk to the sea and a dip in the turquoise waters.

I hope you like them, and I’ll write you very soon to release the last summer pattern and, above all, the little bird of August!
Greetings to all!

The Selkie - Seal Woman of the Sea

Dear Stitchers,
I present to you one of my last patterns and also one of my favorite ones. It represents the beautiful Selkie of the legends of Scotland, Ireland, Norway, and in particular the Orkney Islands, the Shetlands and the magical Faroe.
The Selkies are charming women who, once a year, or in certain seasonal recurrences, come from the sea in the form of seals, then lay the seal skin at the foot of a rock, and dance under the moonbeams or of sunshine, sharing joy and beauty.

The story tells that a fisherman sees them and steals the skin of one of them, who cannot become a seal again and remains a prisoner on earth. She marries the fisherman and lives a moderately happy life, but never ceases to wish to return to the sea, her real home. After seven years, in which the girl gives birth to some children, it happens that, for a distraction of the fisherman, she finds her skin and without delaying a moment greets the children and returns to the sea, reuniting with her real sisters and her real lover.
The fisherman remains alone, raising his children... because nothing can hold an unearthly maiden on earth, she will always tend to return to her true world: the deep and immense sea.

This is my gift to the selkies, that I love so much, and to their magical world. I hope that you love the pattern.
See you soon with other new patterns!
