The story tells that once every blackbird had feathers as white and soft as snow. During the winter they flew in search of food to put away in their warm nests, so they could take refuge inside them for the whole month of January and survive the frosts, and only the first days of February they had the courage to go out, when the sun became warm, the snow was beginning to melt, and the coldest days were past.
One year it happened that shortly before the end of January, a young female blackbird came out of her nest and, believing she had fooled the winter, staying well-hidden during all its coldest days, began fluttering, singing and whistling to make fun of it.
The touchy winter got angry, and it decided to gather its last strength to unleash a terrible storm. Cold, relentless winds lashed the trees, the ice pinned everything in its icy grip, and the birds’ nests were swept away.
The blackbird trembled and shivered, and to resist that merciless cold she took refuge in a chimney, from which the warm smoke of a burning fireplace came out.
She remained holed up in the warmth for three days and three nights, and when the storm died down and the dawn of February 1st finally came, the blackbird peeped out of the chimney and, timidly, began to fly again. The soot, however, had blackened her feathers, which were now no longer white but a shiny, intense black.
Since that day the blackbirds are all black, and the last three days of January – 29, 30 and 31 – which are traditionally the coldest and most tormenting of the year, are called the Days of the Blackbird.
Un anno accadde che poco prima della fine di gennaio, una giovane merla uscì dal suo nido e, credendo di aver ingannato l’inverno, standosene ben nascosta durante tutti i suoi giorni più rigidi, prese a svolazzare, cantando e fischiando per prenderlo in giro.
L’inverno permaloso si arrabbiò, e decise di raccogliere le sue ultime forze per scatenare una terribile tormenta. I venti gelidi e implacabili sferzarono gli alberi, il ghiaccio immobilizzò ogni cosa nella sua presa glaciale, e i nidi degli uccelli vennero spazzati via.
La merla tremava e rabbrividiva, e per resistere a quel freddo impietoso si rifugiò in un comignolo, dal quale usciva il fumo tiepido di un camino acceso.
Rimase rintanata al calduccio per tre giorni e tre notti, e quando la bufera si esaurì e venne l’alba del 1 febbraio, la merla fece capolino fuori dal comignolo e, timidamente, riprese a volare. La fuliggine, però, aveva annerito le sue penne, che ora non erano più bianche ma di un colore nero lucido e brillante.
Da quel giorno i merli sono tutti neri, e gli ultimi tre giorni di gennaio, che per tradizione sono i più freddi e tormentosi dell’anno, sono chiamati i Giorni della Merla.
This is the legend of the Days of the Blackbird, told every year and part of our tradition, and for the third year – not consecutive – I wanted to dedicate a pattern to this story.
This year I associated the blackbirds with the star, which had already been part of the Robins and Stars set and which, white and bright, is perfect to accompany the blackbirds too.
As always, there is one pattern, but made in a mirror-like way, as if the two blackbirds were looking at each other in the mirror. The snow-white blackbird of the legend, and its black version as soot. I made the two patterns in two different ways. The white one is a cushion, and on top of the white star I sewed a small charm in the shape of a key. The black one is a flat ornament, with the matching fabric and a precious snowflake-shaped charm sewn on.
You can finish the patterns as you like, even frame them with two small white twin frames.

Questa è la leggenda dei Giorni della Merla, raccontata ogni anno e parte della tradizione, e per il terzo anno – non consecutivo – ho voluto dedicare uno schema a questa storia.
Quest’anno ho associato ai merli la stella, che già aveva fatto parte del set Robins and Stars e che, bianca e luminosa, è perfetta per accompagnare anche i merli.
Come sempre lo schema è uno, ma realizzato in modo speculare, come se i due merli si guardassero allo specchio. La merla bianca come la neve della leggenda, e la sua versione nera come la fuliggine. Ho realizzato i due schemi in due modi diversi. Quello bianco è un cuscinetto, e sopra alla stellina bianca ho cucito un piccolo charm a forma di chiave. Quello nero è un ornament piatto, con la stoffa abbinata e cucito un prezioso charm a forma di fiocco di neve.
Potete rifinire gli schemi come volete, anche incorniciarli con due piccole cornici bianche gemelle.
