I am ready to present you the other two patterns for this autumn season and in particular for the moment of memory of all those who have been victims of the witch hunt. Halloween, in its most serious connotation, is a time dedicated to this too.
As I mentioned, the patterns are dedicated again to Salem and its poor witches. The settings, the colors, the clothes inspire me a lot and I really wanted to immerse myself in them again. This time I also wanted to represent one of the men executed during the trials, since six of the twenty people killed were men.
The first part of this first pattern is dedicated to the victims, a woman – in my imagination she is the brave Martha Carrier, who had a strong personality and a brilliant mind – and a man.
The man, in particular, in my imagination is John Willard, the young constable of Salem who initially was in charge of arresting the alleged witches and taking them to court. He had strong doubts about the veracity of the accusations, realizing the madness that was hidden behind those arrests, and in May 1692 he refused to continue with the arrests. He was accused himself of complicity with witches and of witchcraft, and became a victim of the hunt. When he was hanged in August 1692, he was only 35 years old.
One of the sentences he uttered when he was condemned is remembered here:
“(...) I fear not but the Lord in this due time will make me as white as snow.”

sono pronta a presentarvi gli altri due schemi per questa stagione autunnale e in particolare per il momento della memoria di tutte e tutti coloro che sono state vittime della caccia alle streghe. Halloween, nella sua connotazione più seria, è un tempo dedicato anche a questo.
Come vi avevo accennato, gli schemi sono dedicati nuovamente a Salem e alle sue povere streghe. Le ambientazioni, i colori, gli abiti, mi ispirano molto e avevo davvero voglia di immergermi ancora in essi. Questa volta ho voluto rappresentare anche uno degli uomini, dal momento che sei delle venti persone uccise, erano appunto uomini.
La prima parte del primo schema è dedicata alle vittime, una donna – nella mia immaginazione è la coraggiosa Martha Carrier, che aveva un carattere forte e una mente brillante – e un uomo.
L’uomo, in particolare, nella mia immaginazione è John Willard, il giovane conestabile di Salem che inizialmente si occupava di arrestare le presunte streghe e portarle in tribunale, ma ebbe forti dubbi sulla veridicità delle accuse, si rese conto della follia che si celava dietro quegli arresti, e nel maggio del 1692 si rifiutò di proseguire con gli arresti. Venne accusato lui stesso di complicità con le streghe e di stregoneria, e divenne vittima della caccia. Quando venne impiccato, nell’agosto 1692, aveva solo 35 anni.
Viene ricordata una delle frasi da lui pronunciate quando venne condannato:
“(…) I fear not but the Lord in this due time will make me as white as snow.”
(“(…) non ho paura ma il Signore in questo tempo mi renderà bianco come la neve.”)
Between the two victims, I drew the name of the likely place where they lost their lives. If until a few years ago it was thought that the Salem Witches had been killed in Gallows Hill, it now seems to have been established that the exact place is Proctor’s Ledge, which lends itself much more to the descriptions drawn from the ancient documents relating to the process and the execution.

Furthermore, regardless of the correct place of execution, a place of commemoration was recently created in Proctor’s Hill where many go to honor the memory of the victims. Twenty stems, arranged in a semicircle, bear their names engraved in the stones.
Tra le due vittime, ho disegnato il nome del probabile luogo in cui persero la vita. Se fino ad alcuni anni fa si è pensato che le Streghe di Salem fossero state uccise a Gallows Hill, sembra ormai appurato che il luogo esatto sia Proctor’s Ledge, che si presta molto di più alle descrizioni tratte dalle antiche documentazioni relative al processo e all’esecuzione. Inoltre, a prescindere dal corretto luogo dell’esecuzione, proprio a Proctor’s Hill è stato recentemente creato un luogo di commemorazione nel quale in molte e molti si recano per onorare la memoria delle vittime. Venti steli, disposte a semicerchio, portano incisi i loro nomi nella pietra.
The second part of the pattern depicts the so-called Witch House, the only building that still exists in Salem, directly connected to the time of the trials and their protagonists. The house had in fact belonged to Jonathan Corwin, the magistrate who took care of hearing the depositions of the first accused of witchcraft at the trial. A disturbing house in which lived a man who unfortunately took part in the hunt, standing on the opposite side to the poor women and men who were captured and finally killed.
This pattern is therefore a portrait of the history of the time, to remember it and honor the memory of the victims.
La seconda parte dello schema invece raffigura la cosiddetta Casa delle Streghe, l’unico edificio che ancora esiste in Salem, direttamente collegato al tempo dei processi e ai loro protagonisti. La casa era appartenuta infatti a Jonathan Corwin, il magistrato che si occupò di ascoltare le deposizioni delle prime accusate di stregoneria al processo. Una casa inquietante nella quale visse un uomo che purtroppo prese parte alla caccia, stando dalla parte opposta alle povere donne e ai poveri uomini che ne furono catturati e, infine, uccisi.
Questo schema è quindi un ritratto della storia dell’epoca, per ricordarla, e onorare la memoria delle vittime.
The second pattern continues my series dedicated to the History Witches and depicts another of the most famous women accused of witchcraft in Salem, Rebecca Nurse. Unlike many other accused, Rebecca was a wealthy and very devoted woman, so her arrest aroused no little surprise and doubts about her real guilt. Unfortunately, the girls who, in their insane “affliction”, spread accusations wherever they could, also stuck with Rebecca, who was eventually hanged along with her sister, Mary Eastey, and all the others.
May they always be remembered and honored, in every place and in every time.
Il secondo schema prosegue la mia serie dedicata alle Streghe Storiche e raffigura un’altra delle più famose donne accusate di stregoneria a Salem, Rebecca Nurse. A differenza di molte altre accusate, Rebecca era una donna benestante e molto devota, tanto che il suo arresto suscitò non poca sorpresa e dubbi sulla reale colpevolezza. Purtroppo le ragazzine che, nella loro folle “afflizione”, spargevano accuse ovunque potessero, si impuntarono anche su Rebecca, che alla fine venne impiccata insieme a sua sorella, Mary Eastey, e a tutte le altre.
Che siano sempre ricordate e onorate, in ogni luogo e in ogni tempo.
