This is the story of a woman who chose to love and for that reason was condemned, mocked, insulted and compared to the witches that, a few years later and in the same place, were killed: Hester Prynne, the woman who carried the embroidered Scarlet Letter on the breast, with her little Pearl, the little girl dressed in scarlet… unpredictable, wild and so incomprehensible to her own mother... A creature of the woods often likened to a bird with red feathers...

In her life as a recluse, Hester Prynne embroidered, and performed her Needle Art is so fine and elegant that many people come to her to ask her needlework, despite the mistrust and hatred against her.
For this reason, in much less time than she had hoped, Hester became the most sought Embroiderer.
Adoro la storia di Hester e la sua forza nell’emergere dalla cattiveria delle malelingue, dalle dicerie e da tutta una serie di regole imposte che all’epoca – ma purtroppo anche oggi – erano in grado di ingabbiare anche le anime più forti.
Hester è il simbolo di tutte le donne che reagiscono e vivono a testa alta nonostante le falsità e la crudeltà di tante persone, è la Donna dall’Ago Dorato che ricama con fili d’oro intorno alla sua Lettera Scarlatta, la quale più che una condanna si trasforma in un punto di forza, quasi magico, che la rende in grado di comprendere la verità che si cela oltre le apparenze.
I love the story of Hester and I love her strength in resisting the malice of evil tongues, of rumors and a whole series of rules imposed at the time - and unfortunately even today – that were able to entrap even the hardiest souls. Hester is a symbol of all women who react and live with honor despite the lies and cruelty of many people. She’s the Gold Needle Woman, who embroidered with gold threads around her Scarlet Letter… a Letter which more than a condemnation becomes a source of strength, almost magical, that makes Hester able to understand the truth that lies beyond appearances.

Una piccolo nota: la data riportata nello schema è approssimativa. Nel romanzo non è mai indicate una data precisa e solo nella prefazione al testo si dice che la storia avviene intorno agli anni ’60 del 1600.
L’introduzione al romanzo vero e proprio, intitolata La Dogana, è ambientata a Salem, così come presumibilmente il romanzo stesso, ma altrettanto spesso si parla di Boston, così, per essere più sicura, ho usato Boston come punto di riferimento del ricamo.
Dedico questo ricamo a tutte le Hester Prynne antiche e moderne, che nonostante le invidie e le cattiverie vivono nella loro forza indistruttibile, protette e illuminate dalla loro verità.
A little note: the date shown in the pattern is approximate. The novel never give an exact date and only the preface to my Italian text translation says that the story takes place in the 60s of the seventeenth century. The introduction to the novel, entitled The Custom-House, is set in Salem, presumably as the novel itself, but Boston is often given as a reference… just to be safe I used Boston as a reference point.
I dedicate this pattern to all the ancient and modern Hester Prynnes, that in spite of the envy and the evil lives in their indestructible force, protected and enlightened by their truth.
