I present to you one of my last patterns and also one of my favorite ones. It represents the beautiful Selkie of the legends of Scotland, Ireland, Norway, and in particular the Orkney Islands, the Shetlands and the magical Faroe.
The Selkies are charming women who, once a year, or in certain seasonal recurrences, come from the sea in the form of seals, then lay the seal skin at the foot of a rock, and dance under the moonbeams or of sunshine, sharing joy and beauty.

Vi presento uno dei miei ultimi schemi, e anche uno di quelli che amo di più. Ciò che rappresenta è la bellissima Selkie delle leggende di Scozia, Irlanda, Norvegia, e in particolare le Isole Orkney, le Shetland e le magiche Faroe.
Le Selkie sono fanciulle dall’aspetto incantevole che, una volta all’anno, o in certe ricorrenze stagionali, giungono dal mare in forma di foche, poi depongono la pelle di foca ai piedi di uno scoglio, e danzano sotto ai raggi di luna o di sole, condividendo la gioia e la bellezza.
The story tells that a fisherman sees them and steals the skin of one of them, who cannot become a seal again and remains a prisoner on earth. She marries the fisherman and lives a moderately happy life, but never ceases to wish to return to the sea, her real home. After seven years, in which the girl gives birth to some children, it happens that, for a distraction of the fisherman, she finds her skin and without delaying a moment greets the children and returns to the sea, reuniting with her real sisters and her real lover.
The fisherman remains alone, raising his children... because nothing can hold an unearthly maiden on earth, she will always tend to return to her true world: the deep and immense sea.
La storia racconta che un pescatore le vede e ruba la pelle di una di loro, che non potendo trasformarsi di nuovo in foca resta prigioniera sulla terra. Allora sposa il pescatore e vive una vita moderatamente felice, senza però mai smettere di desiderare di tornare nel mare, la sua vera casa. Dopo sette anni, in cui la fanciulla dà alla luce dei bambini, succede che, per una distrazione del pescatore, lei ritrova la sua pelle e senza indugiare un istante saluta i bambini e ritorna al mare, ricongiungendosi alle sue vere sorelle, al suo compagno marino.
Il pescatore resta solo a crescere i propri figli… poiché nulla può trattenere una fanciulla ultraterrena sulla terra, lei tenderà sempre a tornare al suo vero mondo: il profondo e immenso mare.
