The Vikings and Grace O'Malley, the Irish Pirate Queen

Hello dear Stitchers!
Here I am with two more patterns for this wonderful summer 2021.
I promised myself that I would no longer design sailing ships, but... I couldn't do without them!
After my new Arctic Animals II and Hypatia of Alexandria, the third pattern I want to present you was a great undertaking, not only for me but also for my model stitcher Emanuela Dossetto, as it is the largest one I have created.
As you may have guessed, it is dedicated... to the Vikings!
I wanted to draw a blonde and proud and beautiful Viking queen seated on her throne, with the Shieldmaiden on her right and on her left a mighty Viking warrior. In the lower part, simpli it, the wonderful Viking Drakkar, with the dragon's head at the bow, the large sail and obviously the row of Viking shields, all different, faithfully reproduced according to traditional designs.
However, I want to pay particular attention to the symbols that I have carefully chosen to insert in the drawing.

Next to the Shieldmaiden I have chosen the rune Algiz, which represents Protection. Algiz protects, defends, it is the protective force that draws from our interiority, from our spirit. It is the inner shield, which the Shieldmaiden embodies and put into action. Next to the Warrior I placed the rune Ur or Uruz, which represents strength, endurance, primitive energy. Uruz is the courage you need in combact, but it also symbolizes good health, physical strength, and confidence in our potential and inner power.
Alongside the Viking Queen I chose two runes that represent the wisdom and wealth of knowing how to reign worthily:
Inguz is the rune of harmony, love, continuity of life, and of inner fulfillment in the highest and noblest way. It also represents the wisdom of the lineage, the family bond, the inheritance.
Jera is the rune of the harvest, of abundance, it represents the seasonal cyclicality, the change that leads to growth, ripening and harvesting of fruits. It represents the rich maternal Earth, which the queen must represent as she embodys Earth sovereignty.
Finally, in the lower part, on the left, you will see the mighty Helm of Awe, a symbol of great strength and protection. There is no certain information about its presence within the ancient Norse mythology, and about its real tracing before the battles. It is more likely that it was created in recent times, but its shape, which recalls the power that branches out from a steady and constant center - such as the radiant sun - has roots in the forms of ancient symbols and in the Norse runes. Next to it, a traditional Celtic knot recalls the eternal cyclicity, the continuity of life, the divine energy that flows without ever stopping, making all nature alive.

The fourth pattern I want to show you is dedicated to pirates, or better, to a great Irish piratess who lived from 1530 to 1603:
Grace O'Malley, whose original Irish name was Gráinne Ní Mháille - also known as Gráinne Mhaol or Granuaile – was the twentieth queen of Umhaill (County Mayo at the present-day) in Ireland, and head of the O'Malley clan. Born in 1530, she was a great revolutionary, whose main occupation was piracy. For this she was nicknamed the "Queen of the Connemara Sea" or "Queen of the Connacht Sea".
It is said that when she was little more than a child she wanted to embark with her father to Spain, but he refused her, telling her that her long hair would be tied to the ropes of the ship. Then she took a knife and cut them off. So followed her father and from that day she took the nickname "Mhaol", which means "bald" or "with little hair", although her hair (presumably red) grew again.
During her life as a pirate she went against the English crown, but she also had a peacemaker meeting with Elizabeth I, during which the two queens exchanged promises to coexist peacefully.
She allegedly died in 1603, the same year as Elizabeth I. A statue of her, with a proud gaze, is installed at Westport House, County Mayo.

Grace was a strong and independent woman, queen of the seas and clan chief. In my drawing I wanted to interpret her and play a little with her appearance, making her similar to the classic piratess, with the sailing ship with black flags, the flag with Jolly Roger and the treasure chest.

With Jolly Roger I wanted to create a nice pincushion, while with the chest I created a little free pattern for you, that reminds something essential for me: Find your Treasure. A Treasure which is perhaps not made of gold coins, but which is equally hidden in the depths of ourselves, in our inner ocean, and is just waiting to be found, so it can make us rich in a more precious way than the one given by money.
To download the free pattern click here: Find your Treasure
