Labyrinth Addicted and Avalon Series

My dearest Stitchers,
with some delay compared to usual – but these needleworks have been challenging – I am finally happy to show you the new patterns.
The first two ones are dedicated to one of the movies that I, and certainly many others, grew up with, and that I love very much: Labyrinth.
The idea came by itself in a totally unexpected way, and I felt that despite the difficulty I should at least try. And I believe I have succeeded.

Carissime Ricamine,

The first of the two patterns dedicated to Labyrinth is the one I love most. It reminds the moment of the masquerade ball, when Sarah’s mind is clouded and under Jareth’s spell. I tried to reproduce the clothes, but making them not too identical to the real ones, because I wanted to give a personal touch and to make the pattern my personal reinterpretation, a variation on the original theme.
Under Jareth and Sarah, whose dress is embellished with some crystal-like glass beads, there is the actual labyrinth, which I noticed is a poorly stitched subject, so I hope you will appreciate the originality of the pattern.

Do you also hear the music accompanying Sarah and Jareth’s dance? Do you also hear the splendid voice of David Bowie that snaps to the heart and carries it away?
This song, like the others on the soundtrack, are exceptional, and to listen to them over and over again after so many years in which I no longer remembered them, was splendid.

Together with this pattern I designed also the beautiful barn owl Jareth transforms into, with his crystal sphere. It’s a little free pattern for you all, that you can stitch it alone, or together with the bigger one. Here you can download the PDF with the cover, the colors summary and the pattern:

The second pattern, on the other hand, portrays the main characters of the journey inside the labyrinth. Also in this case I wanted to reinterpret them a bit, trying to remain close to the originals, but simplifying them as much as I could.

You will obviously find Sarah, together with Hoggle, Sir Dydimus and Ambrosius, and of course him, simply him, the sweet Ludo. Since I love it, I also added the little blue-haired worm, which sent Sarah on the opposite direction to that of the Castle, and made her lose.
After all, it is precisely from her losing that the journey unfolds, that she meets her friends, and that destiny realizes its course. Sometimes taking the “wrong” path is in fact the best thing that can happen.

The other two patterns, with a completely different theme, open up another beloved series, this time dedicated to Avalon. I’ve wanted to draw patterns on this theme for years, but the list of ideas is always so long that I inevitably have to select or postpone.
As I said, these are the first two patterns of a series that will see at least four patterns, as two others are already sketched and will be published in a few months.

The first of the two patterns recalls the book “The Mists of Avalon” by Marion Zimmer Bradley, as the priestess raises her hands and “parts the mists” that separate the common world… from Avalon. It is a powerful, magical gesture, which symbolizes the passage into a sacred, protected world, where the ancient harmonies are still intact and women embody and manifest the divine feminine.
In the pattern, the priestess “parts the mists”, and a flock of white swans, guardians of Avalon, fly behind her, while the full moon blesses her journey with its light.
I don't know if you will like this theme, if you know it or not, but I just know that I had to create these designs, and that this one in particular is very important to me. It gives off a kind of beneficial subtle power that I feel under my skin, and which I hope you will feel too.

The second pattern dedicated to my Avalon Series concerns two of the most famous Ladies of Avalon: Vivien of the Lake – or the Lady of the Lake – and Morgan Le Fay, Morgan the Fairy.
Vivien, tied to the waters of the lake and to the other world, is the one who instructs Lancelot, the Knight in white armor, in her enchanted kingdom, and gives King Arthur the magical sword Excalibur, the very one she holds in her hand in the pattern.
Morgan, on the other hand, is the one who challenges and tests Arthur throughout his life, activating his growth and remembering, in her appearance and role, the ancient Celtic goddesses Morrigan and Rigantona.

The main pattern is accompanied by three ornaments that portray some of the most important symbols of Avalon:
The Silver Branch, with silver bells, which is given to those who are called to reach the magical shores and get to know the enchantment of the island of Avalon.
The Crow, one of the forms that the ladies of Avalon could take, to travel in the common world and move from one place to another in a short time.
The Swan, guardian of the lake and of the magic of Avalon, as well as a symbol of navigation to the sacred island, beyond the mists.

I hope you enjoy these new patterns and that they awake good memories and inspiration in you.
For the realization, I sincerely thank Emanuela Dossetto, who embroidered Avalon - Parting the Mists, Labyrinth and a part of Labyrinth - The Ball; Marina Verrua, who embroidered Avalon; and  Raffaella Fanton, who embroidered a part of Labyrinth - The Ball.
